Job Description

Job Purpose
To develop and implement the editorial strategy and vision of HBKU Press (HBKUP) Academic list and to work with researchers in Qatar and internationally to be responsible for managing academic products, editorial policies and procedures
Key Result Areas
Provide editorial leadership and vision for HBKUP's Academic Publishing Program which includes developing content-pipeline, setting and maintaining editorial standards, and implementing innovative multimedia publishing
Manage submissions and ensure HBKU Press will attract high-quality research papers and academic books
Represent HBKU Press within the local, regional and international academic community; and publicize HBKU Press by giving talks and presentations to forge links with relevant institutions worldwide
Work with appropriate systems (eg BiblioCloud) to ensure inputting and updating of titles and scheduling information adhere to workflows and production timeline
Oversee and implement the development of subject-based journals, special issues, and conference proceedings at HBKU Press within scheduling and budgetary boundaries
Liaise with management to ensure all authortranslator contracts meet HBKUP legal standards
Recruit and develop qualified individuals to the international editorial board to reflect the breadth and scope of HBKU Press, manage the communication to international board members and oversee the structure of the board as it develops
Develop and manage the editorial services to researchers in Qatar to ensure efficient, ethical and timely handling of all submissions by working with the international editorial board, in-house editors, and freelancers
Recruit and manage qualified consultants and freelancers to fulfill editorial needs according to HBKUP standards and processes
Forge relationships with academic institutions internationally, but especially in QatarMENA to increase awareness of HBKUP's offerings
Other reasonable tasks as assigned by supervisor
Operating Environment, Framework & Boundaries
Work is performed in a standard office environment Some travel or work outside of normal office hours may be required for attendance of book fairs, festivals, conferences, or panels Presence at local events to promote readingwriting or represent HBKU Press will require out of office work
Communications and Working Relationships
Supervisor - frequent contacts to provide project updates and receive guidance and approvals
Researchers & academics - Regular contact for soliciting research
Design & Production colleagues - frequent contact for costing, design, and output of products
Authors & agents - occasional contact for acquisitions, signing of contracts, and representation at events (eg Book fairs, launches)
Academic associationsorganizations - occasional contact to develop and maintain relationships with authors and publishers
Freelancers (eg Editorial assistants, translators, copy-editors, etc) - Daily contact for follow-through of book workflows
Publishing houses & universities worldwide - occasional contact regarding potential collaborations

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; Master's preferred
8 - 10 years of editorial experience in journalsacademic publishing, 3 of which at a supervisory level
Outstanding knowledge, skills and experience in the field of academic publishing and familiarity with its processes
Experience with Open Access Journals Publishing
Interest in publishing trends, including digital media and cross-platform publishing
Outstanding criticalanalytical reading and writing skills with the ability to draft and edit a variety of written reports and communications and to articulate ideas clearly and concisely in both English and Arabic
Proficiency in MS Office applications
